On behalf of the Los Angeles Inner City Cultural Center Family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Family, Friends and relations of "Gene" Bolande. Gene was an integral part of the Inner City Cultural Center and a staunch protector, ally and friend to the late co-founder, artistic and executive director of the Center C. Bernard Jackson as well as to the "Queen Mother" of the Center, the Academy Award Nominee for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", Ms. Beah Richards. Gene joined the Center family after a stint on the first weekly series to star an African-American woman in a non-stereotypical role the groundbreaking television show "Julia" starring Diahann Carroll. He was one of the first two black writers on a lead TV show in that era. In 1984 Gene was presented the NAACP Image Award for Lifetime Achievement. All the while Gene was working with the Center leading the Readers Theater Program at the Center dramatically mentoring young writers and actors. Life and Gene moved on. We were in and out of touch with Gene over the years, but always were seeking to know in what part of the world Gene lived. We had lost contact. When we finally received word about Gene it was that he had made his transition. However, since Gene loved a great entrance, we now enter, stage right, to offer our prayers to Gene as he takes Center Stage on the next phase of his journey. We love Gene, his smile, his banter and the way he wore his scarves and hats. Gene was the best and never a truer friend one could have. We will miss him, but he remains in our hearts.

Q: What will you never forget about Eugene?
A: I was a kid living in the projects when my Uncle Gene visited from Hollywood. He’d burst into our apartment, looking larger than life. I still remember his white shoes and the beige trench coat he draped over his shoulders. In true uncle Gene fashion, he told us stories that mesmerized me. Years later, my mom took my brother and me to California for vacations. We’d stay with her older sister and her family. Uncle Gene loved to pick us up and bring us to his magical world. These visits, along with his beautiful smile, handsome face, and poetic voice, are what I choose to remember. As a young kid, Uncle Gene taught me to dream. Go with God, Uncle Gene. Thank you for loving me. I love you,
T

My memory of the short seven years of knowing Eugene as my friend is paved with good & happy times.
We turned supermarket and doctor's visits into Funland-like experiences. I can remember you driving a shopping car through the aisles as we go down the shopping list and us having fun with fellow shoppers. I watched the employees at Piedmont hospital being delighted by your present and witty comments.
My first visit in years to a movie theatre was ours when we went to see the first Black Panther Movie. These are just a smidgen of our fun times hanging together.
I know you have brought your honest and happy spirit with you making the angels happy for your present.
I just want to say thanks to you for the times we shared.

I'm a movie/tv buff and so enjoyed hearing the stories Mr. Bolus would tell of his life in Hollywood. I liked hearing about the famous people that he knew and worked with in the entertainment industry. My mother enjoyed his company and he would make her laugh. God bless!

My Dear Uncle Gene
I will always remember that you came all the way from California to attend my high school graduation. You even took the time to take pictures with all my friends. You’re a wonderful uncle and beautiful human being. I will miss you forever.
