Dr. Lamb transformed my Emory experience for the better. He always called me his "Favorite student" but really, he was the one who changed my life. He made Emory feel like a home, provided valuable mentorship, and of course, made us all fall in love with the beauty of calculus. I can hear him in my head now... the sign of x minus the cosign of x....
What an incredible mind, man, and teacher. I'm so sorry to learn this news. Sending my condolences to the entire family. Know how many lives Dr. Lamb touched.

I was a trigonometry student of Dr. Lamb's in 1983-1984 and a calculus student from 1984-1985 at North Atlanta High School then Northside High School. Thanks to classmate Lawrence Horesch, I managed to maintain a high enough homework grade to squeak by the second semester of my senior year. I did fine all the semesters before that.
Trig seemed much easier to me than Calculus, because Trig was more like math and Calculus was more like literature, trying to figure out which formula applied to any given problem. I was proud to be part of the elite 25 students to make it to Calculus.
I appreciated Dr. Lamb's and respected his approach to make us college ready for advance math.
He was kind enough to complete a recommendation for me for admission to Duke.
Dr. Lamb once made an analogy between vectors and the moves of David Bickers (fellow student) on the football field. He'd check homework by commanding "Do it!" which meant to flip your page to show you did all of your homework. "Back!" meant to return to the front page so he could give you a 0, 1,2, or 3. If you had a question he gave you permission to ask it by bellowing "Speak!" He drank water from a coffee cup. I recall he would invite Julie Zweig (another fellow student) to particpate in class by shouting her last name, "Zweig!!!?" Julie would take a minute to let the aftershocks to wear off then ask her question.
Dr. Lamb will be missed.

Those of us from Northside High School learned this week that our math teacher, Dr. Ray Lamb, passed away.
He was a giant of a man, he played college football with Burt Reynolds and the Florida State Seminoles in their college days. Remarkably, Lamb started on both sides of the ball.
Yet Dr. Lamb never once mentioned that to us in class.
Imagine not trading on those experiences while teaching in Atlanta, Georgia in the 70s through the 90s. Humility and accomplishment, hand in hand.
After his college days he earned graduate degrees and became a math teacher, first in public schools, and then, after retiring from the Atlanta Public Schools at the age of 52, at Emory University, thank you very much.
Dr. Lamb was a huge, gruff, brilliant, softy.
He knew his physical size could work wonders in managing rowdy classrooms. He also knew his size and his command of calculus could easily be perceived as overwhelming.
In those instances, he could be wonderfully gentle. He knew what to do when a student was near tears in frustration with the material. He helped us all believe we could, would, get the hang of these derivatives. Follow the steps.
He enjoyed his shtick, keeping us engaged and slightly off balance.
On those un-airconditoned late spring afternoons in Atlanta, when math and heat became narcotic and some poor soul’s head would start to bob, he would slap his pointer, always a yard stick, at the blackboard.
CRACK.
Invariably, the mark would call out to their maker, their head snapping up. Busted.
“Isn’t that right, Mr. X?” he would ask the newly awakened.
We learned, in such moments, to stifle our laughter, and enjoy the wry glint in Dr. Lamb’s eye, his speech never varying about the equation on the board.
Dr. Ray Lamb was part of a team of educators at Northside who were, I recognize especially now, stupendous in their craft, teaching, and in their subjects.
Each, fiercely committed to public school education and to making NHS a destination.
I thank the stars that Dr. Lamb, Dr. Heller, Jay Guy, and Dr. William Rudolph, our principal and Ms. Guy’s lesser half, helped us learn.
Individually and as a team, they were all-stars.
Dr. Lamb never drew attention to himself. He was private. He was hilarious. Brad DeMent reminded us that Lamb would assert, after working a problem through with us, that math was intuitive. His mantra.
He made us believe it to be so.

Dr. Lamb was my trigonometry teacher at Northside High school. He was one of the best math teachers I have had. He made math enjoyable and easy - no matter how hard it was. I really appreciate his teaching, which led me to become a registered nurse. He will be missed. Condolences to his family.

Dr Lamb taught me Calc in 1985. To this day, after I teach my kids anything math related… I still end with the word “Intuitive”! Thank you Dr Lamb.
