Obituary of S. Maxine Holcombe

Sadie Maxine Porter Holcombe, age 95, of Flovilla, GA, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at home with her family. She was born on Saturday, July 3, 1920 in Statham, GA, the middle child of the late Arthur Newton Porter and the late Ora Wood Porter. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Earl Andrew (Shorty) Holcombe; beloved daughter, Mary Kathryn (Kaye) Loftin; five sisters; and two brothers. Maxine’s full life was dedicated to her large family and many friends. She moved to East Point, GA in 1930 and became a member of East Point Christian Church in 1932 where she taught Sunday School and VBS, and remained faithfully active in the Fidalis Sunday School Class until she moved to Jackson, GA in 2004. She was also active in the East Point Women’s Club, East Point Historical Society, East Point Women’s Republican Party, and the Atlanta Symphony. While her children were in school, she was very active in the PTA. From 1989 to 2004, she lived in the Golden Oakes Retirement Community in Union City, GA and was active in their activities. Maxine and Earl, until his death in 1988 and then with her sister, Charlotte, and very special companion, Jim Short, were avid motor home enthusiasts. They were members of the Georgia Ramblers, Happy People, and Singles International motor home groups and traveled extensively in the U.S., enjoying rallies along the way for many years. In the 50s and 60s, Maxine and Earl were members of the Civil Air Patrol, helping with air search and rescue and training young cadets. Maxine is survived by her daughter, Anna Holcombe Wallis and husband, Ken, of Flovilla; son, Earl Andrew (Andy) Holcombe, Jr. and wife, Jane, of St. Augustine, FL; son-in-law, Sherrill Loftin; 10 grandchildren, Jeff and Tina Loftin, John Loftin, Cheryl Ann and Carey Spraggins, Mary and Philip Dowdy, James and Beoncia Loftin, Andrew and Amanda Holcombe, Laura and Daniel Wright, David and Kristen Thompson, Stephanie Holcombe, and Jeremy Holcombe; seventeen great-grandchildren; and two and a half great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister and brothers-in-law, Ora Jean and Olen Gunnin, and Tom Allison; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Holcombe; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Maxine Holcombe will be at 3:00 P.M. at East Point Christian Church, 1706 Washington Road, East Point, GA 30344 with burial in Westview Cemetery in SW Atlanta. Her remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christian City Children’s Home, 7300 Lester Road, Union City, GA 30291or the Macedonia Baptist Church, Live the Vision Building Fund, 151 Macedonia Church Road, Jackson, GA 30233 or in memory of Maxine. Sherrell-Westbury Funeral Home, 212 East College Street, Jackson, is serving the Holcombe family.
